Six legislators were elected today in the first round of voting for Lower House representatives from Somaliland with Deputy Prime Minister Mohamed Omar Arte making a come-back to the August House.

Two women, Asha Koos Mohamed and Yurub Ahmed Raabi won in the women only category while a former national basketballer and current president of Mogadishu based Heegan Sports club Mohamed Ibrahim Abdi also secured a seat to the 10th parliament.

Others were Abdirahman Beyle Duale and Ahmed Dhimbil Roble.

Goobjoog News correspondents reported cases of delegates voting for more than one MP, an instance which an electoral official said was within remit owing to shortage of delegates from Somaliland. Three MPs were elected by 51 delegates as opposed to 153 delegates.

“In reference to an advisory note from Parliament speaker Osman Jawaari, there is room for same delegates to vote for more than one MP,” Fardowsa Mohamed Duale, a commissioner from Federal electoral body, FIEIT told Goobjoog News.

Voting will resume on Thursday with 40 lawmakers expected to be elected ahead of the presidential polls. The dates for Senate elections is yet to be released.
