Somali Army Prepares for Fresh Operations against Al-Shabaab in Lower Shabelle
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somali government forces are preparing to intensify military operations against Al-Shabaab in Lower Shabelle, as commanders seek to expand security operations in areas where the militant group maintains a presence.
Colonel Farah Mohamud Hirsi, commander of the 82nd Unit of the Somali National Army’s 8th Brigade, 60th Division, addressed troops stationed in Bulo Mareer, in Kurtunwarey district, urging them to remain prepared for upcoming operations.
The commander said the planned offensive would focus on areas of Lower Shabelle where Al-Shabaab fighters remain active, as part of wider efforts to strengthen security and restore stability to communities affected by the insurgency.
He called on soldiers to maintain vigilance, discipline and coordination as they prepare for their next assignments.
Lower Shabelle remains a key battleground in Somalia’s campaign against Al-Shabaab because of its proximity to Mogadishu and its network of roads and rural settlements connecting the capital to other parts of southern Somalia.
The region has experienced repeated military operations as government forces seek to restrict the group’s movements and strengthen control over strategic locations.
Al-Shabaab continues to operate in parts of southern and central Somalia despite sustained military pressure from Somali security forces and their international partners.
The latest preparations indicate that the military intends to maintain pressure on the group in Lower Shabelle, although commanders have not announced when the planned operations will begin or identified specific areas to be targeted.
The army also did not disclose the number of troops expected to participate in the operations.
