Somali Army Reports More Than 60 Al-Shabaab Fighters Killed in Leego Operations

GOOBJOOG NEWS | LEEGO: The Somali National Army says it has killed more than 60 Al-Shabaab fighters and destroyed vehicles used by the militant group during military operations in villages around Leego in the Lower Shabelle region.

The operations were carried out on Friday, November 7, in areas where Al-Shabaab fighters were reportedly operating, according to accounts from the military campaign.

The latest operations come amid an intensified military campaign in parts of South West State, where government forces are seeking to weaken Al-Shabaab’s presence and disrupt its movements.

On October 24, Somalia’s Defence Ministry announced the launch of Operation Banooda, with initial operations targeting Al-Shabaab positions around Leego. The military subsequently reported casualties among the group during fighting near Jameeca on October 26, although those figures could not be independently confirmed.

Lower Shabelle remains an important theatre in Somalia’s fight against Al-Shabaab, which has maintained a presence in parts of the region and carried out attacks against government forces and civilians.

The federal government has urged security forces to sustain operations against the group and called on residents to cooperate with security agencies.
