Somali Army Says It Foiled Al-Shabaab Attack in Baidoa

GOOBJOOG NEWS | BAIDOA: Somali government forces have foiled an Al-Shabaab attack in Baidoa, the provisional capital of South West state, the Somali National Army said, as security forces seek to prevent militant attacks in the city.

The army said Al-Shabaab fighters had been attempting to disrupt security and stability in Baidoa, but government forces confronted the attackers and repelled the assault.

The military did not provide details on the number of casualties from the fighting and there was no immediate independent confirmation of the scale of losses suffered by either side.

Baidoa is an important political and security centre in southwestern Somalia and hosts key South West state institutions. The city has also been a focus of heightened security activity as government forces seek to protect population centres and disrupt Al-Shabaab networks in the region.

The army said its forces would maintain security operations in Baidoa and urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies.

The latest reported fighting comes as Somalia continues its campaign against Al-Shabaab, which remains capable of carrying out attacks despite sustained military operations by Somali forces and their partners.
