Somali Army Wraps Major Training in Galmudug to Bolster Fight Against Extremists

GOOBJOOG NEWS | DHUSAMAREB: Somalia’s National Army (SNA) has completed a major military training exercise in the central city of Dhusamareb, part of an intensified campaign to boost combat readiness and scale up counterterrorism operations in Galmudug State, officials said.

The drills, overseen by top army commanders including Brigadier General Sahal Abdullahi Omar and Brigadier General Ahmed Isse, focused on improving tactical coordination, battlefield effectiveness, and operational discipline across SNA divisions.

The exercise concluded with the launch of a new advanced training program for the “SNA Heroes,” an elite unit at the forefront of Somalia’s war against Al-Shabaab militants and other extremist groups destabilizing the region.

“Our forces are making significant progress in both training and operational capability,” said General Khalid during a closing ceremony. “We urge the public to stand with us as we push forward to restore lasting peace.”

Military officials, including Colonel Mohamed Dhagaweyne of the 21st Division, confirmed that troops are combat-ready and prepared for forthcoming operations targeting insurgent strongholds.

Several standout soldiers received certificates of excellence for outstanding performance during the drills, underscoring the SNA’s growing emphasis on professionalism and merit-based recognition.

The exercise is part of a broader push by the Somali government to modernize its armed forces and reclaim territory from Al-Shabaab. Backed by international partners, Somalia has been steadily increasing its military footprint in strategic regions, including Galmudug, where the security situation remains volatile.

Brigadier General Isse noted the importance of continued civilian support and inter-agency collaboration to consolidate gains and prevent militant resurgence.

“This training is not just about fighting, it’s about building a national force capable of defending our people and preserving peace,” he said.
