GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somali troops backed by Ugandan forces from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) have captured two villages from Islamist militants in the Lower Shabelle region.

The villages of Shaamgare and Raqayle in Awdhiigle district were retaken in an early morning operation under the third phase of the “Silent Storm” offensive.

Ministry of defense officials said the joint forces overran militant hideouts after a brief but intense battle, killing and wounding several fighters.

The ministry said the operation was aimed at dismantling extremist networks and restoring government authority in the region. Remaining militants fled as Somali and AU forces secured the area.

Military officials described the advance as a significant step in efforts to stabilise Lower Shabelle and expand state control in southern Somalia. The wider “Silent Storm” campaign seeks to weaken militant strongholds and allow communities to resume normal life under government protection.
