Somali Authorities Seize Huge Drug Haul at Mogadishu Airport

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somali security forces have intercepted a major shipment of illegal drugs at Aden Adde International Airport, seizing 189 cartons of narcotics and banned pills in a coordinated operation led by the Office of the Attorney General.
Authorities said the cargo was uncovered during a routine inspection of inbound shipments, thwarting what officials described as a significant attempt to smuggle prohibited substances into the country.
The seizure is part of a broader government crackdown on drug trafficking, aimed at curbing the flow of narcotics and safeguarding public health. Officials said the operation underscores improved coordination between security agencies and a growing focus on securing Somalia’s key entry points.
The confiscated drugs have been secured as investigations begin into the origin of the shipment and those behind it. No arrests have been confirmed yet.
Drug trafficking remains a growing concern across the Horn of Africa, with regional and international networks increasingly targeting unstable routes for illicit trade.
Somalia’s government says strengthening border controls and enforcing anti-trafficking laws are critical steps toward stability and rule of law.
