Somali-Born Mursal Isa In Line For Swedish Parliament Seat

GOOBJOOG NEWS|SWEDEN: Somali-born politician Mursal Isa is in contention to enter Sweden’s parliament after the Green Party, Miljöpartiet, regained a parliamentary seat in the Dalarna constituency in the 2026 election.
Isa, who lives in Borlänge and was born in Somalia, is the Green Party’s top-ranked parliamentary candidate in Dalarna. The party’s official candidate list places him first, ahead of Maj Ardesjö of Falun.
The seat is not yet guaranteed, however, as Sweden’s preferential voting system means personal votes could alter which candidate ultimately takes the mandate. Ardesjö, who is second on the party list, could still move ahead depending on the final personal-vote count.
Isa told Swedish broadcaster SVT that the outcome remained uncertain and that he was waiting for the final count. Miljöpartiet’s return gives the party a Dalarna representative in parliament after two consecutive terms without one from the constituency.
The party also made gains elsewhere in Dalarna. It returned to the regional council after losing its representation following the 2022 election and won representation in the municipal councils of Avesta, Mora and Säter. According to SVT, the party is now represented in 11 of Dalarna’s 15 municipalities.
Isa attributed part of the party’s improved performance to changing public attitudes towards energy policy and the transition to alternative energy sources. He said voters increasingly recognised that energy and fuel prices are influenced by factors beyond domestic politics and that Sweden needs to develop its own energy sources.
If the final personal-vote count confirms his position, Isa would take the Dalarna seat for Miljöpartiet in Sweden’s Riksdag.
