Somali Cabinet Approves Undersea Cable Regulation to Boost Digital Security and Infrastructure

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s Council of Ministers has approved a landmark regulation governing undersea communications cables, in a move aimed at safeguarding the nation’s digital infrastructure and enhancing national security.

The regulation, passed during the Cabinet’s weekly meeting chaired by Acting Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Saleh Ahmed Jama, is designed to establish clear rules for the protection, maintenance, and development of Somalia’s undersea cable systems – the backbone of the country’s internet and digital communications.

Officials say the regulation is a critical step toward ensuring the resilience and stability of Somalia’s digital connectivity, which plays a key role in governance, commerce, and social services.

“This decision reflects the government’s strategic focus on securing its digital future and reinforcing national security through robust infrastructure protection,” a government spokesperson said following the session.

In addition to the communications regulation, the Cabinet reviewed progress on several other national priorities. Ministers received updates on preparations for Independence Week celebrations, an annual national event commemorating Somalia’s sovereignty and heritage.

The Council also discussed the state of readiness for the 2025 National Examinations, scheduled to begin this Saturday across all regions. The exams are a significant milestone for thousands of students and a marker of progress in Somalia’s education sector.

Security issues dominated part of the session, with the Ministers of Internal Security and Defense presenting operational updates. They reported intensified military campaigns targeting Al-Shabaab (referred to locally as Khawarij), particularly in newly liberated areas.

The Cabinet praised the Somali National Army and local communities for their steadfast role in securing the nation and reclaiming territory from militant control.

Today’s Cabinet decisions underscore the government’s continued commitment to strengthening national infrastructure, advancing education, and sustaining the momentum in the fight against extremism for a more stable and prosperous Somalia.
