Somali Citizens Previously Imprisoned in Libya arrive in Mogadishu
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: A group of Somali citizens who had been imprisoned for years in Libya arrived in Mogadishu Tuesday as part of a program by the federal government of Somalia to repatriate all its citizens from the North African country.
The program is being implemented under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Office of Migration, Returns & Children’s Rights, and supported by international partners.
The arrival of the latest batch of Somalis from Libya marks a crucial step by the Somali government in addressing the plight of Somali nationals who have been subjected to harsh conditions while trying to migrate through Libya.
Earlier in July, six Somali citizens were successfully brought back from Libya indicating progress in the government’s efforts aimed at rescuing Somali citizens from hardships and inhumane conditions and also to providing them with the necessary support and rehabilitation upon their return.
“These initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of its citizens, regardless of their location,” a statement from the ministry says.
The returnees expressed relief and gratitude upon their arrival in Mogadishu, looking forward to rebuilding their lives with the support of their government and communities.
