Somali Embassy in India dismisses reports of death sentence to 50 Alleged Somali pirates
Somali Embassy in India has rubbished the reports about 119 Somali “alleged pirates” sentenced in India.
On Saturday, “Indian Times “reported that 119 Somali pirates face tough sentences including 50 with capital punishment.
The report circulated by Somali media and triggered demonstrations in a number of cities in Somalia.
The first secretary of Somali Embassy in India Ahmed Hiis, who spoke to Goobjoog news on Sunday, refuted the accuracy of the report “Somali media misquoted the article. The author of article was referring to possible sentences according to Indian penal code” Said Hiis.
Hish said Somali Embassy in India has planned to transfer “alleged pirates” to Somali jails but only after they get verdict.
“We are working with Indian Government to transfer these people back to Somali jails when they receive sentences” said, Hiis.
Indian navy arrested many “alleged Somali pirates” off the coast of Somalia and at least one of them died in Indian jails for Tuberculosis, January, this year.
Somali Embassy in India is heavily criticized for how it handled the case. Reports from Indian doctors assigned to treat many of detainees who developed Tuberculosis labeled the embassy as “unwilling to address their difficult situation”.
