Somali Embassy in Yemen Resumes Passport Services After Eight-Year Suspension

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The Somali Embassy in Yemen has resumed issuing national passports for the first time in eight years, offering relief to thousands of Somali nationals who had struggled to access travel documents.
Ambassador Abdihakim Mohamed Ahmed said the move restores a key consular service and will allow verified Somali citizens in Yemen to obtain passports directly through the embassy.
“Nearly eight years later, we have restarted the issuance of passports, which is a fundamental right of every citizen,” he said at a ceremony marking the reopening.
The embassy said it will prioritise efficiency and transparency to ensure smooth processing.
For years, the absence of passport services forced many Somalis, particularly students and job seekers, to suspend education or travel plans.
The resumption has been described as a “major victory,” saying it restores access to mobility, education, and employment opportunities long out of reach.
