Over 50 Somalis Freed In Congo after Diplomatic Intervention

GOOBJOOG NEWS | KINSHASA: More than 50 Somali nationals detained in the Democratic Republic of Congo have been freed following diplomatic efforts by Somalia’s ambassador to Tanzania and Congo, Ilyas Ali Hassan.

The detainees, who had been held in prisons including Lubumbashi, were released after Somalia’s embassy appealed directly to Congolese authorities.

Ambassador Ilyas said the process was expedited after he lodged a formal request last week with Congo’s envoy to Tanzania, Jean Pierra Massala.

Somalia’s government said the outcome underscores the role of diplomacy in protecting its citizens abroad, as thousands of Somalis live and work across East and Central Africa.
