Somali Forces Achieve Major Breakthrough in Anti-Al Shabaab Operation in Lower Juba

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somali government forces have scored a significant victory against al Shabaab militants in the Lower Juba region, reinforcing the state’s growing military momentum and deepening public confidence in the country’s security strategy.

The Ministry of Defense said elite Danab troops carried out a successful pre-planned raid in the Harboole area, killing several senior al Shabaab operatives linked to attacks and kidnappings inside Somalia and beyond its borders. Weapons and supplies were seized, and several militant bases destroyed in the process.

“This marks another milestone in our national campaign to reclaim full control of our territory and protect Somali lives,” the ministry said in a statement.

The operation is part of a broader military offensive spearheaded by Somali forces in recent months, especially across Jubbaland, Galmudug, South West, and Hirshabelle states. Officials say these gains are not only weakening al Shabaab’s grip but also strengthening the Somali government’s legitimacy and reach in previously contested regions.

Security analysts view the latest success as a reflection of improved coordination, training, and operational capacity within Somali forces — particularly the Danab unit, which continues to play a central role in frontline counterterrorism operations.

The Somali government has pledged to intensify efforts to dismantle al Shabaab’s infrastructure and restore stability ahead of the planned security transition from African Union troops to national forces.
