Somali Forces Capture Senior Al-Shabaab Leader near Kenya Border

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somali security forces, working with international partners have captured a senior Al-Shabaab leader during a planned operation near the Somalia-Kenya border, while three suspected members of the Islamist militant group were killed.

The operation was carried out following intelligence reports on suspected Al-Shabaab movements in communities along the porous border, an area that has long served as a transit route for the militant group.

Security officials said the captured commander is in custody and is being questioned to gather intelligence on Al-Shabaab’s networks and operations along the border. The identity of the suspect was not immediately released.

Military officials said the forces encountered armed resistance during the raid, leading to a firefight in which three suspected Al-Shabaab fighters were killed.

The Somalia-Kenya border remains a key focus of counterinsurgency operations, with authorities from both countries seeking to disrupt the movement of fighters, weapons and supplies used by Al-Shabaab. The militant group has carried out attacks on both sides of the border over the years, prompting increased intelligence sharing and joint security cooperation.

The latest operation comes as Somali security forces have stepped up military pressure on Al-Shabaab across several regions, combining ground offensives with intelligence-led raids targeting the group’s leadership and logistical networks. Despite those efforts, the insurgents continue to launch bombings and armed attacks in Somalia, underscoring the persistent security threat facing the country and the wider Horn of Africa.

Security officials said investigations into the captured suspect are ongoing and expressed hope that information obtained during the operation would support future efforts to dismantle Al-Shabaab’s cross-border networks.
