GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The Federal Government of Somalia has issued a strong warning to businesses and individuals financing terrorist groups, stating they will face severe legal consequences.
Speaking at a press conference in Mogadishu on Saturday, Somalia’s Internal Security Minister, Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail, declared that any business or individual found to have made payments to Al-Shabaab will be subject to strict action, including the revocation of business permits.
“Our security forces will take action against anyone found collaborating with terrorist groups. Do not let your wealth destroy your life,” Minister Ismail warned.
He further revealed that the country’s security forces have implemented various measures to cut off Al-Shabaab’s financial networks, including shutting down financial institutions used by the militant group to receive funds.
The minister also commended the government’s multi-faceted approach to dismantling the terrorist organization, including shutting down social media platforms used by the group for propaganda.
“Our primary objective has been to combat Al-Shabaab and defeat them across multiple fronts. Today, we can confidently say we have weakened them financially, in the media, ideologically, and on the battlefield,” Ismail said.
He added that the government is aware of individuals who continue to secretly engage with Al-Shabaab.
“I warn our citizens to avoid any dealings with Al-Shabaab. If you are found communicating with or facilitating funds for them, the government will take serious action against you,” he emphasized.
These measures are part of the federal government’s broader strategy to weaken terrorist groups while continuing its military offensive in several parts of the country.
Al-Shabaab has long relied on extortion, illegal taxation, and demands for money from businesses in its areas of operation to finance its terror activities. The government’s latest crackdown aims to cut off these revenue streams and further destabilize the group.
