Somali Gov’t Says to Hold Accountable Power Companies for Fire Losses
GOOBJOOG NEWS/MOGADISHU: Electricity companies will now be held liable for losses accrued during fire outbreaks attributed to negligence or use of faulty equipment, the government has said.
National Electricity Authority Director Abdullahi Dayib said Sunday the his office will hold accountable electricity companies for loss of property and lives in case of fires caused by faulty electricity installations.
Dayib said said that the protection of public safety is the biggest responsibility of the agency, and that the companies will be held accountable for the errors of ignorance and negligence that harm people.
Dayib added that the agency will conduct a quality standards review of electrical equipment sold in the country to determine their suitability and safety in line with international standards.
The NEA’s remarks follows increasing incidents of fires especially in Mogadishu, most of which have been attributed to electric faults.
