Somali Journalists Shine at IGAD Awards With Climate-Focused Reporting
GOOBJOOG NEWS | ADDIS ABABA: Somalia’s media fraternity delivered a commanding performance at the 2025 IGAD Media Awards in Addis Ababa, marking one of the country’s strongest regional showings in recent years.
Under the theme “Storytelling for Climate Action,” Somali journalists demonstrated not only exceptional craft but also their growing influence in shaping the region’s climate narrative.
Their work stood out for its ability to shift the conversation from perpetual crisis to resilience and innovation. At a time when the Horn of Africa continues to face the severe impacts of drought, floods, and environmental stress, Somali storytellers helped amplify the message that climate action is not just urgent, it is possible, practical and already underway across communities.
Among the honorees, Abdirahman Salad Abdulle captured attention with powerful photography that reflected the realities and human stories behind Somalia’s changing climate.
In television reporting, Mohammed Nur Mohammed’s work highlighted the links between environmental challenges, community adaptation, and policy action, strengthening Somalia’s voice in regional climate discourse.
Meanwhile, Ahmed Mohamed Absie demonstrated how digital platforms can mobilize awareness and advocacy, using new media to push climate conversations into the spaces where young people are most engaged.
Their recognition represents more than individual achievement, it marks a milestone for Somali journalism at a moment when credible climate reporting is essential for regional stability. It underscores that Somalia’s storytellers are no longer on the sidelines; they are active contributors helping the Horn of Africa reclaim its narrative and chart a more secure, resilient future.
With this success, Somalia’s media community has affirmed its place at the forefront of climate storytelling, proving that powerful narratives can inspire action, influence policy, and strengthen the region’s collective response to its greatest environmental challenges.
