Somali Lawmakers Review Child Rights Charter, Judicial Cooperation Bill

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s House of the People convened its 14th session of the sixth term on Monday, with lawmakers beginning deliberations on two key legislative items aimed at advancing child welfare and international legal cooperation.

The session, chaired by Speaker Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur (Madobe), was attended by 146 Members of Parliament, meeting the quorum required to proceed.

Minister of Women and Human Rights Development, Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, introduced the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, outlining its core provisions and obligations.

Lawmakers raised questions about the charter’s guiding principles and potential financial implications for implementation in Somalia.

The session also included the first reading of the Draft Bill on International Judicial Cooperation, presented by Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Hassan Maalim Mahmoud.

The bill is designed to enhance Somalia’s legal collaboration with international partners, particularly in criminal matters.

Speaker Madobe directed the relevant parliamentary committees to review both documents and prepare for their second readings in upcoming sessions.
