GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: The Armed Forces Court on Monday executed two former members of the national army after convicting them of collaborating with the militant group Al-Shabaab and orchestrating the killing of a senior army officer.

The former soldiers, identified as Mohamed Husein Buulle and Aadan Isaaq Yarow, also known as “Salaad Koofi,” once served in the 14th October Brigade. Military prosecutors said the men were found to have worked with Al-Shabaab operatives and were directly involved in the assassination of Aydiid Mohamed Ali, commander of the 83rd unit.

According to court records, the commander was killed when a mine, allegedly planted by the two men, exploded under his bed at his home. The Armed Forces Court had earlier sentenced both men to death by firing squad. The sentence was carried out today in accordance with Somalia’s military penal code.

The executions come amid continued military operations against Al-Shabaab across southern and central Somalia.
