Minister Ali Yusuf Ali Champions One Person, One Vote as Somalia’s Path to Democracy

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs, and Reconciliation, Ali Yusuf Ali, has reaffirmed the legality and public backing of the One Person, One Vote electoral system, emphasizing that its implementation is both a constitutional right and a shared national responsibility.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of a four-day awareness meeting in Mogadishu, the minister highlighted the significance of the electoral system in restoring democratic governance.

The event brought together various stakeholders including representatives from the Banadir Region, traditional elders, women, youth, scholars, and community leaders to discuss the importance of fair elections and the protection of constitutional rights.

“The One Person, One Vote election is legal, and there is a public will to see it realized. It is our responsibility to work together to make this a reality and restore the constitutional rights of the Somali people,” Minister Ali stated.

He underscored the urgency of democratization, describing the transition to a universal suffrage system as a vital step in strengthening Somalia’s political institutions, ensuring transparency, and empowering citizens to choose their leaders freely.

In his address, the minister also praised the Somali National Army for its continued efforts in combating Al-Shabaab, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan.

He urged all Somalis to stand in solidarity with the armed forces as they work to secure the nation’s future.

The four-day awareness initiative in Mogadishu is part of the government’s broader strategy to promote civic education and prepare the public for the upcoming electoral process.

Participants expressed strong support for the One Person, One Vote system, recognizing it as a fundamental pillar of democracy and good governance in Somalia.
