Somali Mps Back Regional Push On Food Security after Addis Ababa Summit
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: A delegation from Somalia’s House of the People has endorsed stronger regional legislative action on food security and nutrition after concluding a four-day parliamentary summit in Ethiopia.
The Somali lawmakers took part in the Eastern Africa Parliamentary Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition conference in Addis Ababa, where regional legislators agreed to step up cooperation on agricultural reform, resource mobilisation and oversight of food and nutrition policies.
Somalia’s delegation, which included several MPs and the Director of the General Secretariat of the House of the People, Mohamed Hussein Abdullahi (Maarso), said the meeting reinforced the role of parliaments in addressing hunger, climate shocks and fragile food supply chains across East Africa.
Participants focused on transforming food and agricultural systems to make them more resilient and sustainable, with emphasis on using legislative authority to shape policy, approve funding and monitor implementation.
Somali representatives said the outcomes would support national efforts to improve food production and nutrition, while strengthening Somalia’s engagement with regional partners on shared food security challenges.
