Somali Parliament Passes Bills on IDPs and Civil Registration

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s House of the People has approved two key legislative bills advancing legal protections for internally displaced persons (IDPs) and establishing a national civil registration system.
The votes took place during the 16th session of the sixth sitting of Parliament, chaired by Speaker Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur (Madobe).
MP Abdulkadir Barako of the Human Rights Committee presented the final reading of the IDPs Bill, incorporating revisions from previous debates. The bill was passed with 136 votes in favor, 4 against, and no abstentions.
Lawmakers also approved the Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) Bill with 136 votes in favor, one against, and five abstentions.
In closing remarks, Speaker Madobe acknowledged a proposal from several MPs seeking financial support for the Somali National Army and allied local forces battling Al-Shabaab.
He announced that a special parliamentary committee will be formed to assess and act on the proposal.
