17 Held in Mogadishu Over Illegal Gunfire at Independence Celebrations

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somali police have arrested 17 people, including both soldiers and civilians, in Mogadishu for firing live bullets during recent national holiday celebrations, in a crackdown aimed at curbing a long-standing and dangerous tradition.
The arrests followed a coordinated security operation led by the Banaadir regional police in collaboration with other law enforcement units.
The suspects are accused of defying a government ban on celebratory gunfire, which authorities say poses serious risks to public safety and has previously caused injuries and deaths.
“This practice is illegal and puts innocent lives at risk,” said a statement from the Somali Police Command, confirming the arrests. Authorities said investigations are underway to determine whether anyone was harmed by the gunfire.
Firing weapons into the air during weddings, national events, and other festivities remains a challenge for Somali security agencies, despite repeated warnings and public awareness campaigns.
The government has vowed to enforce the law strictly to prevent casualties and maintain order.
The 17 detainees are expected to be charged and brought before court. Officials said the swift legal response is intended to serve as a warning that violations of public safety laws—regardless of rank or motive, will not be tolerated.
The move is part of broader efforts by the federal government to promote law and order as Somalia continues its recovery from decades of conflict.
