Somali president arrives in Egypt for COP27

GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and a delegation led by him arrived in Egypt on Sunday night to attend the UN Climate Change Conference to be held in the city of Sharma Sheikh.

The meeting, dubbed Conference of the Parties (COP 27), will be attended by over 30,000 delegates from 197 countries that are bound by the Paris Agreement, an international treaty on climate change.

The Somali president will be expected to make a case for Somalia on the effects of climate change on food security in the Horn of Africa country and the adverse effects of drought on the population.

The Cairo convention will be the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and will run for 13 days.

The agreement was adopted in Paris in December 2015 and operationalized in November 2016. It seeks to limit global warming to below two degrees Celsius.
