Somali President Makes First Foreign Trip to Djibouti to Rally Regional Support After Israeli Move

GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Monday travelled to Djibouti in his first foreign visit since Israel’s controversial declaration regarding Somaliland, as Somalia intensifies diplomatic efforts to shore up regional and international backing for its unity and sovereignty.
According to a statement from Villa Somalia, President Hassan Sheikh held talks with Djiboutian President Ismail Omar Guelleh focused on coordinated diplomatic action to defend the unity, independence and nationhood of the Federal Republic of Somalia. The two leaders also discussed the broader regional implications of external interference in Somalia’s internal affairs.
“The discussions centred on joint diplomatic efforts to safeguard Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and the importance of a united stance by brotherly countries and international partners against any attempts to divide Somalia,” the presidency said.
The visit underscores Mogadishu’s push to consolidate regional consensus following Israel’s declaration, which has drawn sharp criticism from Somalia and several regional and international actors. Djibouti, a close neighbour and long-time ally, has been vocal in reaffirming its support for Somalia’s territorial integrity.
Rwanda has also publicly expressed support for Somalia, becoming the second country in the region after Djibouti to formally pronounce itself on the issue. Kigali’s position adds weight to Somalia’s diplomatic campaign, particularly within African and multilateral forums where the principle of respect for inherited borders remains central.
Villa Somalia said the two presidents emphasised the need for sustained coordination among regional states, the African Union and international partners to prevent actions that could undermine stability in the Horn of Africa.
President Hassan Sheikh’s trip comes amid heightened diplomatic activity by Mogadishu, including engagements with neighbouring countries, regional blocs and global partners, as Somalia seeks to reinforce a united front against what it views as an unlawful challenge to its sovereignty.
More regional consultations are expected in the coming days as Somalia broadens its diplomatic outreach.
