Somali President makes first trip to US ahead of the UNGA 77 Session

GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and his delegation on Wednesday left for the United States to attend the 77th session of the UN General Assembly.

The President went to the US en route to Addis Ababa, where he met with Ethiopian Finance Minister Ahmed Shide, although no details are available on what the two discussed.

A press release issued this morning said the US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin III will welcome the Somalia President to the Pentagon for an enhanced honor cordon and bilateral meeting at 12:30 p.m. EDT, on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2022.

The Somali President joins hundreds of other Heads of State and Governments for the UN General Assembly, which is meeting for the first time since the Ukraine conflict began.

Mohamud is expected to address the summit on crucial matters affecting Somalia, including plans for the fight against terrorism, drought, and climate change.

He will also meet on the sidelines of the summit with US government officials to discuss bilateral, regional, and global issues of mutual interest, including food security, climate change, and security.
