Somali president praises the ongoing electoral process

President Hassan Sheikh has termed the country’s ongoing electoral process as a major milestone for Somalia, adding that the country last witnessed elections in 1969.

“It is a journey that is going on. In 2020, the plan is to have one-person one-vote election and the elections will happen in constituencies and in districts far way,” said Mohamud at a meeting with Chief of the Somali National Army (SNA) Mohamed Adan Ahmed and his counterpart Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces Edward Katumba Wamala.

Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is among dozens of candidates vying for the post of president, who will be elected by new lawmakers.

Somalia has gathered more than 14,000 Electoral College delegates representing Somalia clans who have voted for over 270 members of the Lower House.

The electoral process  which has been running for last two months culminated in a new parliament which was inaugurated on 27 December 2016.

The country started the registration of  Lower House speaker candidates and the two deputies which will take place on the 11th and 12th January 2017.

After the election of the parliamentary leadership, the lawmakers will elect the country’s president on a date to be set later.
