Somali prime returns home with $100 million pledged by donors

Somalia’s Prime Minister Omar Abdirshid Ali who jetted back to the country has stated that International donors pledged $100 million which is part 500 million intended to repatriate refugees.

“We went Belgium to attend a financial support pledging conference for the return, donors pledged 100 million out of 500 million U.S. dollars for the voluntary return of Somali refugees from camps in Kenya, we have confident that the tripartite (Somalia-Kenya-UNHCR) agreement which clarifies that there would be no forcing repatriation”  he said.

He added “We as Somali government, we have put more efforts to resettle these people in the country”

Comes at a times 5,000 Somali refugees from Kenya’s Dadaab camps have returned home since December last year.

About 4,500 more have signed up to go back in the coming months, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said.

“They also receive a cash grant, food and basic domestic items such as sleeping mats, mosquito nets, solar lanterns, hygiene supplies and kitchen utensils to help them start a new life,” UNHCR said.
