Somalia’s Omar Artan Crowned Africa’s Best Referee at CAF Awards

GOOBJOOG NEWS | RABAT, Morocco: Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan has been named CAF Men’s Referee of the Year, becoming the first Somali official to win the continent’s top officiating honour in a landmark moment for the Horn of Africa nation.

Artan, who beat a competitive field of elite referees from across the continent, was recognised for his strong performances during the review period, including his historic role as the first Somali referee to officiate a continental final when he took charge of the CAF Champions League decider in Cairo. His award comes just months after he became the first Somali selected to officiate at the FIFA World Cup, cementing his reputation as one of Africa’s rising officiating talents.

CAF’s refereeing and technical committees noted the Somali official’s “exceptional consistency and high professional standards,” marking a breakthrough achievement for the East African CECAFA region, where Artan’s rise has been widely hailed.

His win has sparked celebrations in Somalia, where football authorities and fans have described the recognition as a “national milestone” for a country striving to rebuild its sports sector after decades of conflict. Artan has frequently spoken about the pride of representing his country internationally and has dedicated his achievements to the support of the Somali people.

The CAF Awards ceremony in Rabat also celebrated the continent’s top players and teams. Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi was named Men’s Player of the Year, while Ghizlane Chebbak took the Women’s Player of the Year award. The Morocco U20 men’s team won National Team of the Year, and Nigeria’s Super Falcons were named Women’s National Team of the Year. Egypt’s Pyramids FC secured the Men’s Club of the Year prize. Uganda’s Shamirah Nabadda was honoured as Women’s Referee of the Year.

The gala also featured a special CAF President’s Outstanding Achievement Award presented to three East African heads of state for their roles in supporting football development.

Artan’s triumph capped a night of continental celebration and marked a defining moment for Somali football, highlighting the growing international stature of its officials.
