Somali Religious Leaders Denounce Israel’s Move, Warn Against “False Recognition
GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: The Council of Somali Scholars on Sunday issued a strongly worded statement opposing Israel’s recent move to recognize Somaliland, describing the step as illegitimate and harmful to Somalia’s sovereignty.
Reading the official statement on behalf of the council, Sheikh Aden Sheikh Abdulle Dirir said the scholars view the decision as an infringement on Somalia’s nationhood and a direct challenge to the country’s unity and future. He said the council rejects what it called a “false recognition” and reaffirmed its opposition to any external action that undermines Somalia’s territorial integrity.
The scholars framed their position within what they described as a broader historical and political struggle, warning that the move could deepen instability in the region and set a dangerous precedent for interference in Somali affairs.
Separately, Sheikh Dr Sharif Omar addressed residents of Somaliland, urging them not to be drawn into what he described as external political agendas. He cautioned that international actors pursuing their own interests could exploit internal divisions, calling for vigilance and restraint.
Dr Al-Shaadhibi also issued remarks directed at communities in Somaliland, urging them to carefully assess the long-term consequences of international alignments and to prioritise peace, unity and self-determination through Somali-led processes.
The statement and accompanying remarks come amid growing domestic and regional backlash against Israel’s decision, with political leaders, opposition figures and regional organisations reiterating support for Somalia’s unity and sovereignty. The issue continues to generate intense debate as diplomatic efforts unfold at both regional and international levels
