Somali security forces arrest several in security operation in Gedo
Somalia security officers on Saturday apprehended several suspects in an operation that took place in southern region, Gedo.
Farah Abdi Ashara, SNA commander in Gedo said Somali troops carried out raided several houses in several areas including Garbaharay town to hunt down Al-Shabaab members in the area.
Ashara said Saturday dawn operation carried out in and outside Garbaharay by Somali troops who searched houses has netted several people.
“Our forces detained several people during major operations. We knew that some of them were planning to carry out attacks against the residents of this region and we will conduct investigation,” said Ashara.
He said the operation was well-orchestrated and came after a tip-off from members of the public, noting it was meant to beef up the security in the region which has been experiencing attacks in the recent past.
“There are cooperation between the security forces and the residents and that help us to continue efforts to enhance the security,” he said.
Government and AMISOM forces are always conducting security operations to prevent militants from launching attacks, but Al-Qaida affiliated group Al-Shabaab which is battling federal government is still able to wage attacks in the country.
