Somali Students Embrace IoT Tools in Drive to Modernize Agriculture

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Nearly 50 Somali students enrolled in an Internet of Things (IoT) training program in modern agriculture toured experimental farms operated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation this week, as Somalia steps up efforts to digitize its farming sector.
The visit, organized as part of a hands-on learning initiative, exposed students to a range of smart farming technologies including hydroponic systems, greenhouse automation, drip irrigation, and real-time weather and crop monitoring tools.
Officials said the tour aimed to encourage young Somalis to use technology-driven solutions to address food insecurity, low crop yields, and inefficient resource use , persistent challenges in Somalia’s agriculture-dependent economy.
“By engaging youth in practical innovation, we are preparing the next generation of agricultural leaders who can drive sustainable development through digital tools,” said a Ministry spokesperson.
The IoT training program, supported by the Somali government, forms part of a broader national strategy to integrate innovation into key economic sectors, particularly agriculture, which employs the majority of the population.
Students were urged to develop locally relevant solutions that blend traditional practices with data-driven approaches to farming.
The Ministry reiterated its commitment to empowering youth with the technical skills needed to lead Somalia’s agricultural transformation and improve long-term food security.
