Somali woman who set self on fire in critical condition but getting medical help-Nauru authorities
The government of the island nation of Nauru bordering Australia has confirmed a Somali woman set herself on fire Monday but warned such acts would not compel authorities to allow any refugee cross to Australia.
In a statement Monday, Nauru said the woman whom the media identified as Hadon was critically injured and was being treated by doctors from Australia.
The incident follows the self immolation by a 23 year old Iranian man called Omid on Nauru last week. He later succumbed to his injuries in a Brisbane hospital on Friday. That incident occurred during a visit by UNHCR representatives to inspect conditions on the island.
Nauru has denied claims conditions in the camp were deplorable noting refugees enjoyed better conditions than other refugee camps in the world.
“Refugees and asylum seekers are not distressed due to their conditions. Their conditions are better off than most other refugee camps in the world. This has been confirmed by almost every other refugee group in the world,” Nauru said in a statement Monday.
Australian media quoted one of Hodan’s teacher who said the woman was “a kind woman, a good friend and would never harm anyone”.
“Hadon used to come to English classes at night because she was too shy to come in the normal day classes,” said the former teacher, who did not wish to be named.
Another Somali refugee last year was alleged to have been raped and got impregnated on Nauru. The Australian government said it would offer her medical support but would be returned to the camp.
