Somalia Advances Connectivity with National Fiber Optic Policy Discussions
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia is at an advanced stage in its plans to put in place a framework that will strengthen and regulate the country’s digital infrastructure.
The framework will be implemented through Somalia’s National Communications Authority which is preparing the introduction of new regulations on submarine cable landings.
The discussions were held during a recent united Fiber Optic Policy meeting held in Mogadishu, chaired by the Ministry of Communication & Technology Director General Abdi Casiis Duwane and attended by top government officials and other stakeholders in the communication sector.
The Fiber Optic Unit Policy will lead the country’s installation and expansion of Fiber Optics, which will reduce expenditure, and provide an opportunity for modern economy, and connectivity to the country.
“The unified fibre optic deployment policy aims to guide national telecommunications companies towards collaboration for the installation and expansion of fibre optic cables,” Ecofin reported.
The country’s present domestic fibre optic network is underdeveloped and fragmented, even with the existing connection to five international submarine cables – a sixth is on the way.
