Somalia Advances World Trade Organization Membership Bid

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Federal government of Somalia’s Second Deputy Prime Minister Abdisalam Omer Dhay Sunday chaired a crucial National Trade Facilitation Committee (NTFC) convened to discuss Somalia’s accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The inaugural meeting brought together 18 representatives from various ministries and government agencies which reviewed a report outlining steps necessary for Somalia to join the WTO.

In his remarks, Deputy Prime Minister Dhay said the membership a critical milestone in the nation’s path toward economic recovery and sustainable development.

“Joining the WTO will open new avenues for Somalia’s economic growth by integrating our markets into the global economy. This effort aligns with our broader goal of fostering trade, creating jobs, and enhancing the livelihoods of our citizens,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.

The NTFC also discussed measures to improve the country’s trade facilitation systems which includes modernizing customs procedures, developing export strategies, and ensuring alignment with global trade standards.

The Deputy Prime Minister praised the NTFC which  is tasked with streamlining Somalia’s trade policies and addressing barriers to international trade, for its proactive role in laying the foundation for this transformative endeavor, expressing optimism about Somalia’s economic future.

The NTFC plans to submit the finalized report to the Federal Government and continue engaging with WTO representatives to expedite the membership process.

The committee’s efforts are part of Somalia’s broader strategy to strengthen its global economic ties and attract investment in key sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, and infrastructure.

By joining the WTO, Somalia will benefit from reduced trade barriers, increased foreign investment, and access to international markets.
