Somalia, Algeria Deepen Security Cooperation amid Regional Counterterrorism Efforts
GOOBJOOG NEWS | ALGIERS: Somalia and Algeria have agreed to strengthen cooperation on security, counterterrorism and state-building during talks between Interior Minister Ali Yusuf Ali Hosh and senior Algerian officials in Algiers.
The discussions focused on expanding collaboration in reconciliation, local governance, institutional development and the exchange of security expertise, as both countries seek to bolster stability in their respective regions.
The meeting brought together Algeria’s National Security Chief Ali Badaoui, Algeria’s newly appointed ambassador to Somalia Mohamed Alim, and Somalia’s ambassador to Algeria Yusuf Ahmed Hassan.
The talks come as Somalia intensifies its military campaign against the Al-Shabaab insurgency, while also preparing for a broader transition of security responsibilities following years of African Union peacekeeping support.
Algeria, which hosts the African Union police cooperation body AFRIPOL in Algiers, has long positioned itself as a key regional actor in counterterrorism and reconciliation efforts across Africa and the Sahel.
Both sides reaffirmed what they described as longstanding historical ties between Somalia and Algeria and pledged to deepen bilateral cooperation in support of peace and stability.
