Somalia among 141 countries that voted against Russian invasion of Ukraine

GOOBJOOG NEWS/NEWYORK: Somalia is among 141 countries that cast a historic vote to condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine at the UN General Assembly.

The UN General Assembly held an emergency session which voted to condemn Russia in a motion dubbed “aggression against Ukraine” following Russia’s February 24 invasion of Ukraine.

According to the Associated Press, the resolution aims at pillng pressure on Russia to end its military operation in Ukraine and withdraw its troops from the country with immediate effect.

141 out of the 193 member states of the UN, including Somalia, Kenya, Ghana, Gabon, Rwanda, Djibouti, Congo, and the Democratic Republic of Congo voted in favour of the motion, a first in 40 years when the General Assembly has sat and passed a resolution to reprimand a member’s aggression.

The UN resolution against Russian invasion passed the 2/3 majority with just 5 votes on Russia’s side: Russia, Belarus, Eritrea, North Korea and Syria.

Some 35 countries abstained from the vote, including India and China, and African states – Burundi, Senegal, South Sudan, South Africa, Uganda, Mali and Mozambique.

A total of 17 African countries abstained from the UN vote to condemn Russia invasion.

Though Uganda has not declared its stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the President’s son and commander of Land Forces was quoted as saying that “the majority of mankind (that are non-white) support Russia’s stand in Ukraine”.
