Somalia and Qatar Agree to Deepen Security, Development Cooperation After Doha Talks
GOOBJOOG NEWS | DOHA: Somalia and Qatar have agreed to expand cooperation on security, development and political reforms following high-level talks in Doha between President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
During the meeting, the two leaders reviewed progress on existing agreements covering infrastructure, security support and diplomatic coordination. According to officials, discussions also focused on strengthening joint efforts in counterterrorism, economic development and institutional reforms.
President Mohamud briefed the Emir on Somalia’s ongoing security operations against armed groups, the government’s wider state-building agenda, and the country’s transition toward direct elections.
He emphasized that additional support from Qatar would accelerate reforms and help stabilise areas newly recovered from militant control.
Emir Sheikh Tamim reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to backing Somalia’s reform programme, pledging continued assistance in key sectors including governance, security training, humanitarian relief and economic development.
Both sides agreed to activate and expand cooperation mechanisms established in previous bilateral agreements, with officials describing the outcome as a renewed push to strengthen political and economic ties.
The meeting underscored the growing strategic partnership between Mogadishu and Doha, with further technical discussions expected to follow in the coming months.
