Somalia Announces Bid for AU Peace and Security Council Seat
GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: Somalia has announced its bid for a seat at the Africa Peace and Security Council for 2025-2028 as it advances its critical role in the international community.
In a statement Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Somalia was suited for the post given its role in hosting the African Union Missions for 17 years, noting it has established itself as a ‘role model for African-driven solutions to African challenges.
Somalia also noted that, to be fair, it deserved the position since it has not been represented at the Council since its formation in 2004. As a current member of the UN Security Council, Somalia said it is ‘uniquely positioned to align and advance African priorities on the global stage.
Further, Somalia said its ascension to the East Africa Community and recent admission to the UN Security Council ‘highlight its leadership role in advancing regional and continental priorities.
Given the chance, Somalia says it will enhance peacekeeping efforts through the application of valuable lessons learnt from its own experience and address the root causes of conflict to create sustainable peace across the continent.
Somalia will also drive reforms and strengthen crisis management to ensure proactive and effective responses to emerging challenges, the statement read in part.
The current members of the AU Peace and Security Council are Angola, Botswana, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, The Gambia, Morocco, Namibia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone.
