GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The Federal Government of Somalia has approved a nationwide policing roadmap for 2026, aimed at strengthening public security and improving the delivery of law enforcement services.

The decision followed a meeting of the Programme Steering Committee, which oversees the second phase of the Joint Police Programme (JPP II), that endorsed both the annual work plan and budget for the coming year.

Internal Security Minister Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail said the approval would accelerate police reform efforts by enhancing coordination between federal and state authorities, improving operational capacity, and expanding people-centred policing across the country.

The programme focuses on building a professional and accountable Somali Police Force through training, institutional development, and closer engagement with communities, officials said. It is also intended to strengthen public trust in security institutions at a time when Somalia continues to face threats from militant groups and organised crime.

The meeting brought together state ministers responsible for security, senior police commanders, and international partners, including several United Nations agencies, the European Union, and Britain, who provide technical and financial support to the programme.

Government officials said the reforms would help improve day-to-day security in urban centres and stabilised areas, supporting wider state-building efforts and the gradual transfer of security responsibilities to national institutions.
