GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s federal government on Wednesday approved the first set of development projects under a new peace and stability initiative, targeting primary healthcare services in regions recently recaptured from militant control.

The decision was made during a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre in Mogadishu, where the government’s Towards Peace and Stability in Somalia (TPSS) initiative, supported by Italy, moved into its implementation phase.

The three projects will be rolled out in the federal member states of Jubbaland, Galmudug, and Hirshabelle, areas that have seen increased government control following recent military operations against Al-Shabaab, known locally as the Kharijites.

“These projects are a critical step in restoring essential services to communities that have suffered for too long,” Prime Minister Hamza said during the session. “Rebuilding healthcare is not just a development goal, it’s a path to lasting peace and resilience.”

Funded by the Italian government and managed by the Office of the Prime Minister, the TPSS program is designed to promote stability through rapid delivery of public services in areas emerging from conflict.

Officials said the initial focus on healthcare reflects both urgent community needs and the government’s broader national development priorities.

Italian Ambassador to Somalia, Pier Mario Daccò Coppi, who attended the meeting, welcomed the move and reaffirmed Italy’s long-term commitment.

“We are proud to support Somalia in translating security gains into real, tangible improvements in people’s lives,” he said.

Authorities say the newly approved health projects will serve as a model for future TPSS efforts, with additional initiatives expected soon in sectors such as education, infrastructure, and local governance.

The approval marks a significant milestone in Somalia’s attempt to stabilize liberated territories by replacing insecurity with services, jobs, and functioning institutions.
