Somalia Army Chief Inspects Troops at Mogadishu Military Base
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s army chief, Brigadier General Ibrahim Mohamed Mahmoud, has visited a military base in Mogadishu as the country’s armed forces continue efforts to improve troop readiness and operational capacity.
The army chief visited Maslah military camp, where he inspected the conditions of the base and received an update on the activities of troops stationed there.
He was received by Colonel Abdullahi Osman Jimcaal, commander of the Somali National Army’s 73rd Military Police Brigade, who briefed him on the unit’s operations, its current situation and the progress made in carrying out its duties.
The visit also focused on the needs of the troops and plans to improve their working conditions, military capabilities and operational effectiveness.
The inspection comes as Somalia’s security forces continue to face the long-running threat posed by Al-Shabaab militant group that remains capable of carrying out attacks despite sustained military operations against it.
Somali forces, supported at different stages by international partners, have been working to regain territory and strengthen security in areas where Al-Shabaab has maintained a presence.
But the country’s security challenges extend beyond military operations. The Somali government is also under pressure to strengthen the army’s command structures, logistics and training as it seeks to take greater responsibility for national security.
The African Union’s current security mission in Somalia has been part of that transition, with Somali forces expected to gradually assume a larger role in securing the country.
For troops serving in frontline and strategic bases such as Maslah, readiness can depend as much on equipment, logistics and living conditions as on battlefield capability.
The army did not provide details of specific shortcomings identified during the inspection or say whether additional resources would be allocated to the base.
The visit is likely to be viewed as part of the military leadership’s wider effort to assess units and improve preparedness at a time when Somalia is seeking to build a more capable national security force.
