GOOBJOOG NEWS | NEW YORK: Somalia has taken over the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council for January 2026, a rare diplomatic milestone for the Horn of Africa nation as it continues to expand its role on the global stage.

As president of the 15-member council for the month, Somalia will chair meetings, set the programme of work and guide negotiations on resolutions and presidential statements related to international peace and security, diplomats said.

The role places Somalia at the centre of discussions on some of the world’s most pressing conflicts, peacekeeping missions and compliance with international law, at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions.

Diplomats say the presidency reflects growing international confidence in Somalia’s diplomatic engagement following years of rebuilding its institutions after decades of conflict. Somalia rejoined the Security Council as a non-permanent member in 2024 for a two-year term.

During its presidency, Somalia is expected to oversee debates involving crises in Africa and beyond, while promoting cooperation among council members and strengthening multilateral approaches to security challenges.

The rotating presidency of the Security Council changes monthly among its members, giving each country an opportunity to shape the council’s agenda and manage its formal proceedings.
