GOOBJOOG NEWS | ADDIS ABABA: Somalia has renewed its call for deeper regional cooperation and institutional reform during a key African Union summit, signaling its intent to play a more assertive role in shaping the continent’s future.

Speaking at the 24th Extraordinary Session of the AU Executive Council in Addis Ababa, Somali Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union, Abdullahi Mohamed Warfaa, underscored Somalia’s commitment to active engagement within AU institutions.

“Somalia stands ready to contribute meaningfully to African-led frameworks that advance peace, uphold international law, and invest in science and innovation,” Warfaa said, reaffirming Mogadishu’s position as a proactive player in continental affairs.

The high-level session brought together foreign ministers and senior diplomats to fast-track pending elections and institutional matters.

Delegates elected new members to the AU Peace and Security Council, the Commission on International Law, and the African Space Council—key organs tasked with driving the AU’s 2063 development agenda.

While several elections were concluded, others were postponed to July 2025 to allow more time for consensus among member states.

Somalia’s strong diplomatic posture reflects a broader effort to strengthen its presence in regional blocs and shape multilateral decisions at a time when the Horn of Africa faces evolving security, legal, and technological challenges.
