Somalia Bans Single-Use Plastic Bags

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s Ministry of Environment has announced a ban on single-use plastic bags in the country as from 30th June 2024.

In a statement issued Thursday, the ministry further stated that importation and disposal of single-use plastic bags is also prohibited in all parts of the country and urged all businesses and companies to seek eco-friendly alternatives.

It added that anyone found in violation of the ministry’s directive will face leagal consequences in accordance with the law.

Environment minister Amb. Khadija Mohamed Almakhzoum, said that the ban is part of the government’s efforts to protect the environment and combat climate change

She added that plastic bags pose a serious threat to the wildlife, marine life, and human health, as they are not biodegradable and can accumulate in landfills, oceans, and waterways.

Somalia joins other African countries, such as Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda, that have already banned the use of plastic bags.
