GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s Immigration and Citizenship Agency (ICA) said on Saturday it had prevented 124 young Somalis from attempting to migrate illegally over the past three months, part of a broader crackdown targeting human smuggling operations.

The individuals, aged between 18 and 25, were intercepted while trying to leave the country for destinations in Europe, Asia, and other parts of Africa, according to the agency.

Suspected smugglers have been referred to federal authorities for prosecution.

“Our mission is to protect the future of Somali youth by preventing them from falling victim to the perils of illegal migration,” an ICA spokesperson said.

Authorities have intensified scrutiny of travel agencies and individuals suspected of facilitating illegal migration, barring minors from travel and launching investigations into businesses linked to trafficking networks.

In parallel, the ICA has rolled out public awareness campaigns to educate families on the risks of irregular migration, including drowning, exploitation, and abuse.

The agency called for stronger coordination between families, government bodies, and business leaders to stem illegal departures and promote legal migration channels.
