GOOBJOOG NEWS | BELÉM, Brazil: Environment Minister Bashir Mohamed Jama has said the country’s climate agenda must put vulnerable groups at its centre, warning that national resilience depends on policies that serve all communities, including people with disabilities.

Speaking on the sidelines of the COP30 climate summit, Jama said Somalia risks deepening social and economic inequalities if climate adaptation strategies fail to consider those most exposed to droughts, floods and environmental shocks.

He said disability-inclusive planning is no longer optional for a country already grappling with extreme weather and fragile infrastructure.

Jama met Somali civil society representatives attending COP30, noting that their advocacy is strengthening Somalia’s position in global climate negotiations. He praised their work in pushing for accessible solutions and said their insights are helping shape national climate frameworks.

The minister added that Somalia’s future climate strategies, from early-warning systems to disaster response and community resilience programmes, will be designed to reflect the needs of people with disabilities. He said this approach will improve the country’s long-term adaptability and ensure international support aligns with Somalia’s priorities.

Jama stressed that Somalia’s contribution to global climate action must be rooted in fairness and inclusion, calling it essential for building a stable and climate-secure future.
