Somalia Calls on International Partners to Support Move to Defend Sovereignty

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia, through the National Consultative Council (NCC) has called upon the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), African Union, Islamic Union, Arab Universities Association, IGAD, EAC and other international friends to stand with its right to protect the independence and unity of the land in accordance with international laws.

The Council meeting which was chaired by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and attended by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, Federal Member States Presidents and Banadir Mayor Yusuf Hussein Jimaale was convened to respond to Ethiopia’s naval deal with Somaliland, which has been rejected by Somalia.

The Council stated that it opposes the deal which it said not only violates the country’s Provisional Constitution but also contravenes international laws.

Further, it noted that parliament was fully supportive of the Federal Government of Somalia’s decision to reject the Ethiopia – Somaliland deal, fulfilling its constitutional responsibilities to protect and preserve the state, dignity and unity of the country and the people of Somalia. 

The NCC also called on the Somali people, both local and abroad to unite the people of Somaliland to preserve the independence and unity of Somalia.

On Tuesday, Somali Parliament rejected the agreement signed in Addis Ababa between the President of Somaliland and the Prime Minister of Ethiopia saying it was against the international law, and the regulations of the African Union, IGAD, Arab League and United Nations.

Addressing parliament, President Mohamud urged the Ethiopian government to respect the sovereignty of Somalia and not to violate international laws, terming the agreement null and void and that Somalia would not accept it.

Members of the House of the People debated on the deal and denounced the agreement as illegal and illegitimate and declared that the water and land of Somalia would not be compromised. to Support Move to Defend Sovereignty
