Somalia to celebrate women’s day
Somalia will join the rest of the world on Wednesday to mark the international day for women, which it recognizes in its calendar.
The Day will mark celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
This year, Somalia has made significant progress in enhancing the status of women in the recently concluded elections.
Although, Somalia did not achieve the 30 per cent quota for women in parliament yet there are 80 women parliamentarians out of 329.
The Somali Women’s Organization in collaboration with the Mogadishu administration is to hold ceremony which women leaders and government officials are to deliver speeches acknowledging the role of the women in the society.
For decades, Somalia women have been living in different tough conditions facing abuses such as sexual violence.
Recently, a video of a girl being raped by six men in Puntland posted on social media had caused an outrage across the country.
The perpetrators were arraigned in court and sentenced to a combination of lashes, prison time and a fine.
